Learn the basics about cannabinoids

How does cannabis work?

The Endocannabinoid System or ECS is an intricate signaling network within the brain and body responsible for homeostasis. Natural endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes work to regulate a variety of processes, including memory, pain, sleep, appetite, mood, stress, reproduction, and fertility.

Endocannabinoids are molecules produced by the body as needed. They bid to the receptors to alert the ECS when it’s time to take action. The two main receptors are:

  • CB1 receptors found mainly in the central nervous system
  • CB2 receptors located mainly in the peripheral nervous system (especially immune cells)

The enzymes take care of breaking down endocannabinoids once they’ve served their purpose.

Researchers have identified over 150 cannabinoids in the marijuana plant Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most well-known and abundant cannabinoid and responsible for the euphoric effects. THC mimics the body’s natural endocannabinoids, binding to both CB1 and CB2 receptors and affecting both mind and body.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is another major cannabinoid. Unlike THC it doesn’t cause psychoactive effects and doesn’t bind to CB1 or CB2 receptors in the same way. There’s still some debate over whether CBD prevents endocannabinoids from being broken down or perhaps binds to receptors we have yet to discover. However, research does support the potential for CBD to treat pain, inflammation, nausea, and a long list of medical conditions.
